Lea Salonga, Binatikos Dahil sa 'Privileged' at 'Insensitive' na Mensahe Ngayong Quarantine
In order to contain the coronavirus cases in the Philippines, President Rodrigo Duterte has implemented a Luzon-wide community quarantine. During the quarantine, more and more people are turning to social media to appeal to the masses. More influential people, like celebrities, also use social media as a platform to share their two cents about the crisis.
Among those who urged the masses to 'stay home' is the award-winning singer and actress Lea Salonga. On Instagram, the "The Voice" coach shared a message directed at the people who still persist to go out during the quarantine period.
"To those who are complaining about the quarantine period and curfews, just remember that your grandparents were called to war; you are being called to sit on the couch and watch Netflix. You can do this."
However, instead of sending a message of unity, Lea's post backfired. Many netizens found her message 'insensitive' and among them is renowned filmmaker Jay Altarejos. Jay did not make a secret of the fact that he disagrees with Lea's sentiments.
"Sabagay kung ang exposure mo nga naman sa kalagayan ng buhay ay MS SAIGON. Tangama, yung mga maralita ba may Netflix, may mga hi-nord na pagkain?Ne, di lang pala limited ang range ng boses mo, pati utak mo."
The director's message was met with support and agreement from many people, who are also calling out the government to act for the families in need during the crisis.
