Matapos ang Quarantine, Tindahan ng Alak, Dinumog ng mga Sabik na Publiko!

Ever since the coronavirus pandemic has broke out, countries all over the world have declared lockdown and quarantine in an effort to contain the virus. More than a month later, many people are looking forward to finally leaving their homes to venture outside. What would be the first thing you'll do once the quarantine is finally lifted?

Some people will probably take this chance to go back to work, while others will surely go to malls and tourist spots. But in India, right after the lockdown, these people went straight to the most unexpected establishment: the liquor store!

India is one of the Asian countries that declared a nationwide lockdown. On May 4, the government has finally decided to lift the quarantine in some areas. Not shortly after, people immediately flocked outside. Some of them were even spotted queueing in liquor stores.

In several photos taken by Adnan Abidi, we can see hundreds of men waiting in line in front of a liquor store. In an effort to buy alcoholic beverages, these patrons even ignored the social distancing rule, which requires at least 1 meter of distance between each individual.

In an effort to control them, the local government also sent out law enforcement authorities. In one of the photos, we can see police carrying a long stick. According to ABS-CBN news, the police used the stick to beat the people who were not following social distancing.

The Indian government was forced to open liquor stores since they are a major source of tax revenue in the country. According to the Delhi government, it will be adding a 70 percent "special corona fee" on the liquor sales starting on Tuesday.

As of May 5, India already has 42,500 reported cases of COVID-19 positive patients. Among those numbers, 1,400 passed away due to complications. These figures are relatively small, compared to India's population of 1.3 billion.
