Magsasaka sa Davao, kabilang sa Top 50 sa best cocoa producers in the world

A Filipino farmer was one of the chosen candidates for the 2019 International Cocoa Awards. Jose Saguban, a farmer from Davao City, made it to the top 50 of the competition for the best cacao bean samples.

As of now, the sample cacao beans from the 50 candidates are being evaluated by the committee. Saguban is the only representative from the Philippines, and many people are hoping that his beans will win the hearts of the judges.

As part of the Cocoa of Excellence Programme, the global competition is held every two years. During the International Cocoa Awards, thousands of hopeful candidates from many countries compete for the top prize of the best cocoa bean.

This program highlights the importance of quality cocoa, which is one of the most exported goods in the world. This industry makes billions of dollars every year from imported chocolates. The International Cocoa Awards also parades the diversity of cocoa flavors.

The cacao tree originated in Central America. Now, thanks to giant leaps in agriculture, we are able to grow cacao trees even in the Philippines! And Pinoy farmers also produce quality cocoa beans.

As a matter of fact, this is not the first time that the Philippines has made it to the competition. Way back in 2017, another Pinoy from Davao once again made it to the top 50 with the cacao beans that produces Malagos Chocolate.
